A year ago, I had written about child abuse. Since my rant, I lodged an official complaint to the society manager. I would love to say the lift guy was reprimanded, but he wasn’t I was consoled by the secretary saying strong action would be taken, nothing happened. I know for a fact that guy still works there. Although I did notice a change in his behavior, but he STILL works there. This is our society.
We love to say we are aware about issues, we are moving towards an openness that din’t exist before. Media is making things public, the uproar is getting louder. More people are talking about it, but the fact still remains, offenders are not getting reprimanded – not soon enough. Why is abuse tolerated so well in our country? Why are girls taught by her mother to be a mule to her in-laws? Why do we, men and women alike, love enslaving ourselves? – Women to their men and men to whatever that wins them bread and butter.
Keeping aside the matter of punishing offender; what about the victim? Let’s say some jerk doesn’t say she was ‘inviting her Karma’ by wearing revealing clothes or walking with a man or, I don’t know, using a public toilet. Will she ever be free? – Mind you, I am not saying she will not get over what happened to her; because she will. The human mind is beautiful, it knows how to handle trauma, when to repress or when to ‘let go’. With time, her physical wounds will heal, her emotions will get sorted, she will be at peace with herself, but will society let her?
Every women I know, at one point or another, has been sexually harassed. This is the TRUTH! While media posts about an average of 5 rape cases every day, how much time do we take to educate ourselves about how to handle the after effects? I urge you to read about it, because this could happen to anyone, to your loved ones or, probably, it has. Being wary is not enough, be sensitive.
